Character.

Sept 12th/October

17th /Nov 14th.

These three day long workshops in Galway with Max Hafler and Roberta Nolan. which begins with finding the Feelings Qualities and general target of the character through the body ,  moves towards specificities of the character discovered with imaginative exercises, and a final day on exploring the general atmosphere in which the characters might exist, reacting with the atmosphere and the other characters in the story. The workshops are to be held in Galway and can be taken singly or in a series as they are all moving towards the quest for our character . We would advise taking the three, but we do not insist.

Each workshop is held in Galway from 10 -5

If you book for the three workshops  they will cost 170€

Style, Atmosphere and Genre.Online!

“The costumes, sets and makeup may be in a certain style but they do not make the style of the performance if the sense of style does not live in the soul of the actor.” Michael Chekhov : On the Technique of Acting.

A four week exploration  of two hours per week in using these elements to find your character and your place within the play. On line courses really give the student artist time to explore and experience elements of the art in a supportive group.

Style , Atmosphere and Genre are all connected. They seem like blanket terms, vague definitions, broad brushstrokes, but they are not. You might make your playing too generalised if you immerse yourself in them too completely. Aren’t they the ‘job’ of the writer, the director, the designer??? How much does the performer have to take these elements into account?

The genre refers to the play itself. what is it, a tragedy, a comedy. A drama, a melodrama. – it’s a label for the audience and artists alike and it gives us certain types of energy and a general direction of travel. In TV and Film, these genres are even more defined, accentuated as they are by music/ camera angles / clothes etc. Chekhov is quite specific about the type of atmosphere and energy these definitions give us.

The atmosphere itself  is something intangible and spiritual.  It is much less of a category or a given. It is something created by all the creative artists involved . It is the spirit or as  Chekhov calls it “the soul of the performance”, through which the feelings are expressed and the story told.

And then there is Style. Style, rather than the duvet of fripperies and embroidery which it is somewhat confused with, is something which comes much more from inside – from the very soul of the artist. But perhaps it is an absorbing of these periods  and external influences which pour into the character/actor and affect them? The performers cannot ignore these powerful elements.

Using a short scene from a different play every week, students will explore the importance of these three dramatic elements for the performance.  Useful for performers and directors alike.
