ARCHETYPE

WORKING WITH NON-NATURALISTIC CHARACTERISATION.

Tutors Max Hafler and Declan Drohan

When we are faced with stylistically non-naturalistic characters, how do we go about respecting the fullness of their Archetypal natures in our acting without making generalised and superficial choices? One of the great power of working with the Archetypes is that they open a tremendous energy in our acting ; that is what they are, energies. They are not the whole of what the characters are but they are not stereotypes either. When looking at something like THE ONLY JEALOUSY OF EMER.by Yeats, or Shakespeare or indeed any kind of archetype which is not in our everyday consciousness in any play, it can provide a powerful way in.

Declan and I are going to lead an exploration of archetypal characters and atmospheres and then with you apply them to two short scenes of the play.
